Hyperpigmentation occurs when excess melanin is produced in some areas of the skin.

Hyperpigmentation spots such as age spots are caused by exposure to the sun. For this reason they mainly appear on the parts of the body that are frequently exposed, such as the face, hands and arms. They tend to manifest themselves as small areas of dark skin.

A special form of dark spots on the skin are freckles that often appear on the face. Freckles are caused by exposure to the sun, and usually appear on the face.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs when a wound or skin injury heals and leaves a flat and discolored area as a result. This is a common problem for those suffering from acne, and can also be caused by cosmetic treatments such as dermabrasion, laser and chemical peeling.
